The Global Database on Protected Area Management Effectiveness (GD-PAME) is the most comprehensive global database of management effectiveness assessments for protected areas. It indicates whether a protected area, included in the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA), has been assessed via a methodology assessing management effectiveness. The GD-PAME is a searchable database that includes assessments submitted by a wide range of governmental and non-governmental organisations to UNEP-WCMC, and is updated on a monthly basis.
The UK’s contribution to this initiative, the UK PAME review of 2017/18, is a continuation of the IUCN National Committee UK’s ‘Putting Nature on the Map’ project, which supported the UK Government response to the official call for such information from the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, to assist in the achievement of the Aichi Targets and the Sustainable Development Goals.
The UK PAME review covered all UK designation types (marine and terrestrial) with national, European and international status.
The UNEP-WCMC global PAME database has now been launched and can be viewed at https://pame.protectedplanet.net/ . It contains some 28,668 records so far. By searching for United Kingdom under ‘Country’, this confirms that of this total, 8,091 of the records of assessment come from the UK, constituting over a quarter (28.2%) of the content of the database.
